Do you remember when it was normal to be in the same job for 25 years, or even 40 years? The idea probably seems a little strange now and not many people choose to do this. Most people want more diversity of experience. In fact, many people now say that you learn the most you are going to in a job within the first two years. If you went back 50 years and told people to move jobs every two years, they’d think you were irresponsible and lacking in commitment, but this way of thinking is nowadays the accepted norm.
Now fast forward to 2018, nearly 2019! There is still a common belief (misconception) that in order to progress your career, you need to be in a permanent job, working for the same employer for at least two years. However, as our dear friend Bob Dylan predicted – the times they are a-changing… again. In the last 10-15 years we’ve entered a digital economy with Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. We’ve transitioned from the focus on ‘company brand’ to a focus on ‘personal brand’. Now it’s about the individual and the accumulated experience they develop across companies rather than the current company they work for. Now, we see workers, in all industries, leveraging off prior experience to take them further in their careers.
And in the last 5-10 years we’ve seen the rise of the gig economy with Uber, Airbnb, Airtasker, Freelancer, Expert360 and Upwork. These digital platforms are providing a channel for individuals to gain a steady income without the security (or rigidness) of a permanent job. Even the most white collar sectors are embracing these platforms. Did you know that management consulting giant McKinsey has profiles for its consultants on Expert360? And in 2018 there has been a 29% increase in the UK in the number of lawyers joining the gig economy. The gig economy isn’t the future, it’s right now! Are you ready to join lexvoco and give it a try?
